La Falda de Fela (Fela’s Dancing Skirt)

June 2017 Bombazo 41 (1 of 1)

Dancer Felicita Hernandez at AfricaCaribe June 2017 Bombazo at the Casita de Don Pedro in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood.

I took this image last weekend at a Bombazo which is a gathering of people that dance the ancient Bomba dances from Puerto Rico. During the summer months in Chicago, one of the places that Bombazos take place at is at the Casita de Don Pedro on Division Street in Humboldt Park. I was using a 35mm lens on a Nikon D7000, so I did not have the luxury of very wide angles to capture crowds and overall vistas so I was looking at individuals on a short range. So I photograph without being able to imagine the final result.

On this day I was using a 35mm lens on a Nikon D7000, so I did not have the luxury of very wide angles to capture crowds and overall vistas that I so much like, so I was looking at individuals on a short range. So I photographed without being able to imagine the final result. When I put this image on the computer it became evident that besides the drums the symbol of Bomba dancing are the skirts.

Felicitas or Fela the individual on the image, handles the skirt gracefully and with skill which shows many years of learning and dedication, in fact I think the skirt becomes her and she express what she feels with the skirt. The skirt and her are one.

Portrait of a Saxophonist – Roy McGrath

Several months ago I met Roy McGrath at an activity for the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in Chicago. I like the intensity, the sharpness of the music he play, I like that crosses musical styles. But above all he is a leader in the music world and workhorse.

I find Roy very fascinating to photograph.

The Riot Fest protest – Gloria Burgos the unitimidated

riot fest protest 15-0051
Since I have taken the cause of protesting Riot Fest, photography has take a back seat, however as things go along I will dedicate more time to capture the memories of what has become an epic battle. Here in this image Gloria Burgos gets confronted by 2 Riot Fest supporters. She was unabashed, in singleminded in her response.

Aldermanic Runoff Election for 31st and 36 Wards – Millie Santiago and Gilbert Villegas.

I took this images as I was working on the story for WBEZ – Chicago Public Radio.

Images were taken at victory party for Milly Santiago and Gilbert Villegas at the Logan Square Auditorium. I think this was probably the most important election besides the mayoral election. Long time deputy major Regner “Ray” Suarez lost to Milly Santiago. Also Gilbert Villegas won the election for the 36th ward. Members of the progressive caucus including Alderman Proco Joe Moreno celebrated with newly elected Alderman’s Santiago and Villegas.

Getting ready to photograph election results tonight

This is how I feel, I am a pitcher for a major league team, I am currently warming up in the bullpen (at home preparing the equipment) as I warm up I think of my pitches and the different batters I will face (Political candidates and where the will be and the different lighting circumstances). I am thinking of the manager, and the signals he will send me (Chip Mitchell WBEZ reporter). Soon I will go to the mound.
